Grappling with men is essential for the achievement of universal sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). However, this has been a troubling endeavour, with mixed results. Evidence remains sparse and critical demographers have long pointed to the implications of failing to grapple with gender and power in data production for policies and programmes. This is a direct result of the political and conceptual limitations of SRHR that makes invisible the critical roles of gender and power. The linking of hegemonic masculinities and reproductive justice, two complementary and critical theoretical and analytic approaches, is a mechanism to address this. These have often been used separately in SRHR-related work. Engaging with both of these as complementary allows for greater articulation of the conditions and systems of injustice that shape people’s sexual and reproductive lives and freedoms. This provides a needed lens to make visible the structures and institutions that contribute to and uphold key pillars of oppression. I argue that by using these two approaches together, data and evidence can more effectively capture the gendered power structures that produce reproductive injustices. This will provide much-needed evidence to inform the transformational change necessary for the fulfilment of universal SRHR
