F. Mari--The 'Zambaigos' in 16th-Century Spanish America. The zambaigos, offspring of African serves and Indian mothers, are to be distin-guished from the other mixed-ancestry groups: half-caste (Spanish fathers, Indian mothers) and mulattoes (Spanish fathers, African mothers). Miscegenation between Africans-be they freemen or slaves-and Indians was subjected to par-ticularly stringent repression for both socio-economic and cultural reasons: while the zambaigos were legally free since the abolition of Indian slavery, they were also completely estranged from Spanish-Christian ways of life. Yet, despite ail legal discriminations and prohibitions, they constituted a sizable portion of the colonial population by the end of the ioth century
