A review is made of the research on inter‐ethnic friendship patterns undertaken over the past three decades. The most reliable generalisation which can be extracted from these studies is that strong preference for own‐group friends is established at an early age. Furthermore, there is some evidence that this pattern of friendship intensifies with increasing age. For most age groups, but especially primary school children, gender differences are strong competitors to ethnic differences, as obstacles to friendship. Some methodological procedures which may have obscured the full extent of inter‐group friendship are examined and the implications of these researches for schools are discussed
