The article outlines the place of the private maintenance system in providing for children, the legal and historical background, and the steps involved in a typical maintenance case in the courts. It then discusses a variety of reforms required, together with the problems involved in the suggested remedies, and ends with a brief look at the advisability of a radical reform of the system It concludes that, unsatisfactory as aspects of the system are at present, socio‐economic conditions in South Africa are not currently suitable for suggested reforms emulating foreign examples. Rather, unspectacular but careful correctional implementation of existing policy is the route to go in the immediate future
