From 1036 to 1227, Tangut elites actively sponsored renovations at Dunhuang's famed Mogao Caves. Employing a data-driven approach, this article reveals that Tangut elites, when deciding which caves to renovate, were more likely to choose those that were originally constructed when Dunhuang was under Tibetan rule. Closer analysis of the actual renovation projects Tangut elites sponsored suggests that their renovation work was a highly political activity. Engaging with the historical caves from the Tibetan period and inserting their own traces within them allowed the Tangut elites to forge a distinctive historical continuity with this earlier period and establish their own cultural and political authority. By demonstrating the statistical and the art historical significance of renovation patterns at Dunhuang, this article argues that Mogao was a site that possessed multiple historical genealogies and imagined lineages
