Age-Sets, the Chieftaincy and a Dualist Organization : The Abure of the Lower Ivory Coast. - In Ivory Coast Lagoon societies, known for the diversity and the originality of their age-set systems, the Abure have an uncommon position. The most original feature of their social structure is to be dominated by two organisation principles often thought of as incompatible, namely age and filiation. As a matter of fact, age-sets of complex morphology coexist with a strong clan organization and a hereditary chieftancy. Forthermore, a dualistic two-form division (a diametrical and a concentric one) mediates the relations between these various institutions. By studying the constraints ail these institutions exert on one another, and the resulting changes, light can be shed on certain fundamental properties of age-sets in this region
