This study reports an investigation of the relationships between sex-role identity and sexual object choice. The Bem Sex Role Inventory was completed by a group of 37 lesbians and a comparison group of 44 presumed heterosexual women similar in age and education. The BSRI assesses masculinity and femininity as independent constructs. Results show that the lesbian group is higher is masculinity, but no lower in positive femininity characteristics, than the heterosexual group. Discriminate analysis was employed to reveal the BSRI items contributing most strongly to the group differences. Results are discussed in terms of the findings of other research with respect to the psychological adjustment of lesbians
