From Testimory to History, from Victims to Martyrs. The Birth of Democracy in Kinshasa). - Qualitative analysis of représentations, based on personal narratives, helps to restore political meaning of ordinary people's actions and opens the way to participatory democracy. Extracting the story of someone's participation in a political event from that person's life story helps avoiding the pur-poseful overpoliticisation of the account offered on the spot. The paper analyses the process of people's appropriation of politics through the personal narrative of Christians' March (February 16, 1992) in Kinshasa, the most important street demonstration against the self perpetuation of the Zairian Second Republic. Once invested by Christian symbols, the narration transforms victims into martyrs. As martyrs, they became founding heros of the people's political participation. As custodians of their memory, ordinary men and women became political actors
