The article summarises the results of a series of studies of a community in West Belfast. The research followed three lines of enquiry — a survey of heads of households in the community; measures of achievement and adjustment amongst primary school children; and individual interviews with a range of community leaders. The community in question has been severely affected by both economic deprivation and, in latter years, civil unrest. The paper highlights the issues which confront this community, focussing on material poverty as the core concern. Drawing on the work of both Hechter and Tajfel, the social problems which manifest themselves in the community are discussed and analysed
