Postcolonial critics paid little attention to involuntary exile inside and outside the African continent, unlike voluntary exile which has been the subject of multiple literary works. This article focuses on Mweze Dieudonné Ngangura's film Pièces d'identités (1998), which shows how involuntarily exiled Congolese women in Belgium are forced to cope with different types of identities. First, the article argues that identity constructions due to experience of involuntary exile lead the characters to an unstable liminal space that alters their self-fulfilment. Secondly, it shows that the interconnection between memory and identity of African women empowers them to break away from the traumatized identities that exile constitutes for them
