This paper begins with a brief historical background of Sri Lankan immigration to Australia, then estimates the number of Sri Lankans in Australia with a view to elaborating on their growing ethnic diversity. Next, by using various accounts available in the relevant literature, it shows how the perceptions about Sri Lankan immigrants have been conditioned by a notion of a middle class, which has had no problems in adapting to the Australian society. This perception has led to a situation where contemporary problems faced by recent immigrants from Sri Lanka remain largely unnoticed by the Government. Finally, the paper shows how the lack of new research is impeding a proper understanding of the ‘human condition’ of Sri Lankans who have arrived in Australia during the last two decades and what needs to be done
