This article constructs the general outlines of the precolonial history of the Idaw al-Hajj commercial diaspora, a grouping which linked the Black African Wolof states of northwestern Senegal with the Arabo-Berber world of the western Sahara. The Idaw al-Hajj maintained a broad commercial hegemony from the late seventeenth century until the gum boom of early nineteenth century. Over time, the 'White' Idaw al-Hajj of northwestern Senegal fully integrated them-selves culturally into the Wolof world. The history of the Idaw al-Hajj demonstrates that the ethnie identities of both 'White' Arabo-Berbers and 'Black' Wolof were contextual and subject to transformation as a resuit of changing historical circumstance
