Resumo
This article explores the complex relationship between intellectual property rights and property in persons, focusing on the concept of "potential property." Strathern argues that intellectual property, particularly in the context of biotechnology and genetic information, challenges traditional notions of ownership and personhood. She examines how the idea of potential property, encompassing future possibilities and uses of genetic material, creates new forms of value and control over individuals and their biological information. Drawing on ethnographic examples, including the patenting of cell lines and the commodification of genetic resources, Strathern analyzes the social and ethical implications of treating persons as potential sources of property. The article highlights the tensions between individual rights, collective ownership, and the commercialization of biological materials, raising questions about the nature of personhood and the boundaries of property in the context of emerging biotechnologies.
