This article argues that in promoting the just society we face 'ideals without an ideal', or principles in irreconcilable conflict where to do right we must do wrong. This situation does not, however, prevent us coming to some definite conclusions on specific topics although we lack a systematic theory which holds without exception. The argument is illustrated by reference to the tension between goals of equal opportunity and compensatory justice
