The Artist's Gender: The Bamana Sculptor's "becoming woman". - By focusing attention not on the work of art but on the process for making it, the question of abstraction in African art-the refusal of images and imitation-can be raised in new terms. The paradigms of fertilization and childbirth are indispensable for understanding this process. Intensely felt by the sculptor, the analogy between creation and procreation brings about the "becoming woman" of this sacred outcast, whose tragic destiny is presented herein. Indifferent to theoretical-undoubtedly masculine-pretensions, this field-work on the Bamana (Mali), like its subject matter, bears witness, through its extreme receptivity, to art's essential feminity
