Abstract: The intensification of landings of refugees from Africa and the Middle East on Italy’s shores - in a social context where multicultural processes have been poorly developed over the last twenty years – has greatly destabilized Italian society and its role in the European Union. This situation calls on anthropologists to make a contribution in terms of civil engagement, not just academic, to seek a solution to these problems. On the other hand, the reception system for refugees and asylum seekers set up by the Italian government can become the ethnographic field for a targeted observation on the practices actually implemented and the values at stake. Spontaneous forms of reception - organized by ordinary citizens, or autonomous initiatives of individual municipalities - lend themselves as well to the ethnographic observation, and question in different forms the competences of cultural anthropology
