Demographic studies have only recently begun to include a perspective that links gender systems to demographic behavior in an international context, and incorporates development matters into their reflections. Moreover, this type of research is of limited scope and highly fragmented. More scientific knowledge is required on the relationship between gender-based inequality-or other types of inequality-and demographic processes. This shortcoming stifles the development of demography as a science and limits its usefulness for those responsible for drawing up social policies
