This paper presents a number of specific methodological features used in the social sciences. It attempts to discuss the analytical advantages offered by the comparative method and present some of its most recent developments. Its also attempts to clarify various conceptions of the purpose of the comparative method (meaning that it refers to way in which causal generalizations are made and explanations of specific historical events), conceptions whose consistency and utility it tries to assess. Finally, it links the aforementioned methodological differences to theoretical debates regarding social structures, political culture and institutions in the analysis of political phenomena
