Maha Azzam documents perceptions of the Gulf confrontation as an Islamic issue in Muslim countries in the Middle East, the Maghreb, Africa and Asia. The crisis has cemented perceptions of the West's enmity towards the interests of Muslims, she writes. She investigates whether an Islamic political identity emerged in the confrontation, based on a complex mix of nationalism, anti-colonialism, hostility to Western hegemony and perceived control of the Middle East, and the wish for economic modernization
