Born in Paris in 1755, Madame LeBrun reached the height of her career as a portrait painter in the years before the Revolution. Then, an ardent royalist sensing danger because of her sympathies, she escaped into exile. Her life is interesting not only because she was a woman who painted Marie Antoinette and the aristocracy of the eighteenth century superbly, but also because she was a courageous woman, far ahead of her time, who had the ambition and ability to rise above her early povertystricken background.
