This article describes and highlights some of the theoretical and political facets of the vast intellectual work and life of Celso Furtado. It includes the years following the military coup of 1964, his exile from Brozil and the loss of his political rights. The author shows the radical changes in his theoretical and political reflection which could be described as a break away from certain issues coucerning economic development that had previously dominated his work and whose discursive legacy is known as the dependency theory. It marked the beginning of a new existential and political era for both Furtado and Brazil
