No presente artigo, situamos a educação ambiental no contexto da gestão de Unidades de Conservação (UCs) e a sua relevância para a construção de processos democráticos que favoreçam a construção de sociedades sustentáveis. Apresentamos conceitos relevantes para a reflexão proposta, um breve histórico da construção de conselhos em UCs e algumas de suas premissas e indicadores de avaliação, como contribuição à prática de gestores de tais áreas protegidas
