The field of health communication today can be proud of its accomplishments, mainly achieved in the past two decades. A number of university centers of excellence have been established in health communication. The field attracts funding from some of the most prestigious funding sources, including the National Institutes of Health, and health communication contributes directly and usefully to health agencies and to health programs. The health communication field differs from other communication specialty fields in that its dependent variables of study usually are of unquestioned good, it involves collaboration with such other academic units as schools of public health and schools of medicine, and it has borrowed ideas like social marketing from university business schools and private companies
