During the course of a number of years, work has been conducted at the St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences [RAN] (formerly the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Linguistics, USSR Academy of Sciences) on the gathering of data on the contemporary language situation in the regions of the Far North. At the basis of this work is a linguo-ethnographic program developed by the author of the present article in conjunction with A. K. Baiburin. The principal object of research of the ethnographic part of the program is the change in the relation between the conservative and innovational tendencies in the contemporary culture of the peoples of the North;1 the object of research of the linguistic part is changes in the language situation. Thus, the principle of the close connection between language and cultural processes has been included in the program from the start
