At the beginning of the twentieth century, Teleut shamans [kam] carried out grandiose séances [kamlaniia] to contact the first-ancestor-deity, Adam. One of the stages of the path that, according to Teleut notions, was completed by the kam was marked by a tamga, a mark on a pine tree growing at the base of heaven.1 The kam dramatized an arrow shot from its bow and held a drum [buben (frame drum)] in the left hand. Taking aim, he quickly ran a beater [kolotushka] across the drum, as though releasing the arrow toward the target.a
