The hydrographic network of the Republic of Kalmykia, developed in the western part of the republic, is broadly represented by the watercourses of the eastern slope of the Yergenei and small rivers; the eastern part of the republic does not have a river network. The principal water sources of the rivers are snow melt-waters. The regime of the rivers and watercourses of the eastern slope was characterized in 1995 by spring floods of short duration. Numerous ponds on the washes and small streams were filled with water in the springtime, naturally desalinating them. Groundwater and rainwater were insignificant as sources of river water, and did not have a substantive effect on the water level
