As with any major monument\nthat figures prominently in architectural\nhistory, the Great Mosque of Cordoba has\na classic architectural story behind it.\nThis story attracts little attention in the\nUSA, where the medieval pasis is of little\ninterest because their national narrative\ndoes not depend on it. On the other hand,\nin Europe, where a recent exhibition\ncatalogue on Islamic art concluded with the\nquestion, Que representa hay al-Andalus\npara nosotros? ( What does al-Andalus\nrepresent for us today? ) (Cheddadi,\n2000: 270), medieval history plays a\npowerful role in modern heritage politics.\nEspecially in Spain, the interpretation\nof the medieval Iberian past, with its\nintertwining threads of Christian, Muslim,\nand Jewish culture, is a deeply political act
