As President Pervez Musharraf was celebrating the second anniversary of the military coup which ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in October 1999, Pakistan found itself thrust once more into the limelight. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington in September 2001 opened a new chapter in US-Pakistani relations at a time when Pakistan was struggling to re-structure its economy and return to democratic elected civilian government. As the country continues to try and put its domestic affairs in order, the government has now been called upon to take a frontline position in the global war against terrorism
