Le capitaine William Robert Broughton fut l'un des officiers de la marine royale britannique charge de l'exploration et de la cartographie des cotes du Pacifique et de l'Asie du Nord-Est. A ce titre, il prit en charge, en 1793, le commandement du vaisseau royale HMS Providence. L'A. retrace les expeditions maritimes du capitaine Broughton entre 1794 et 1798 a travers les differentes etapes de ses voyages, entre les iles Kouriles et Sakhaline, le Japon et la Coree, ainsi que Macao
