The article concerns the extensive use of the conditional in Pinget's novels. This mode has two double functions. One of thse functions serves as an instrument which enables the novelist to simultaneously encompass reality and himself looking at reality. The other introduces the subject in the process of enunciation but at the same time removes it allowing the subject to distance himself from his own enunciation. Thse simultaneous or alternating movements of ontological personalization and aesthetic depersonalization are essential to the making of Iitrture as Pinget perceives it
