The purpose of the present study is to analyze how the Folha de São Paulo newspaper represented the romantic pagodemusic style and also its admirers, the people from "periferia" (the poor suburbs from the Brazilian big cities), from 1995 to 1997. The method of research used was media analysis, the study can be characterized as both qualitative and quantitative. It was combined with documental research and literature review. It was verified how the culture and entertainment section of the Folha de São Paulo (Ilustrada) has carried a social imaginary that understands the romantic pagode as an inferior and massified musical style destined to listeners from the less privileged social classes in Brazil. From the analysis of the material, some questions emerged, such as "pagode is samba or it is not?","did the pagode help the resumption of traditional samba in the phonographic market of the mid-1990s?". The work focuses on the paradigmsof "high" and "low" culture and other stereotypes related to race and social class
