The west-african women retailers between formal and informal markets. The Togolese women retailers illustrate the way in which many African women have participated in the urban economy of the coastal regions of West-Africa. Less educated than men but faced with the obligation to earn a living they have adapted their know-how in the field of business to the supplying channels of the urban centres. The women cloth retailers in Lomé (Togo) are famous for their mercantile traditions, their professional solidarity and their participation in the political life of Togo. The present article also analyses the durability of the various functions of the market in a native environment
