Greater France» : reflections on the aporetical character of national identity during the colonial era. The representation of "Greater France" emerged in the French colonial and national narrative at the dawn of the 20th century, during the second period of the French empire, and developed later under various denominations. The article aims at a critical deconstruction of that representation, seen from the double perspective of the history of representations and of the discussions about the concept of " the people" in political philosophy. The author highlights the aporetical character of " greater France", an ideological construct, which pretended to melt in an impossible entity what was in fact, politically, an arrangement of populations of which only some could be acknowledged as a "people" in the sense of a collectivity of citizens
