Michael Young, This succinct critique was drafted by Professor Stanner between 1953 and 1955, though judging by the most recent bibliographic reference he brought it to its present state of completion in about 1965. Although urged by his colleagues to publish it, he apparently never sought to do so. It seems appropriate for Canberra Anthropology, however, to present this essay as a pendant to the obituary written for this issue by John A. Barnes. The essay is quintessential Stanner in style; it moves beyond a practising anthropology and sketches a mature ‘existential’ view in which human relationships cannot be reduced to mere ‘dealings’. Although several critiques of Totem and taboo have been published since this one was written, we cannot surmise in what ways the author might have amended or updated it; we have left the text unaltered and simply supplied missing references. The editors are grateful to Pat Stanner and Diane Barwick for submitting it
