Since 1980, many large regional studies led by interdisciplinary and multinational teams have made a major contribution to our knowledge of the last wet period of the Sahara in the fields of chronology and ecology. New conceptions of paleoclimatology, archeological discoveries and hundreds of datings published since 1985 have led to the rejection of certain accepted ideas and the putting forward of new hypotheses regarding the Sahara. These hypotheses deal with the diversity of the wet Sahara compared to the unicity of today's Sahara, the length and demographic consequences of periods of drought recorded within the wet period and on the conditions of the movement of people and (agriculture) (cultures) up to the drying out of the desert
