The « Indians » having been considered as « ancestors » by the creoles that took over the country with the independence, and half-bred liberalism having disqualified them as citizens because the y were considered as « uneducated », it was only during the short period of social transformations during the years 1944 to 1954 that an autonomous indigenous political conscience developed. Since the 1960s and throughout the 1970s, the new indigenous leaders formed in the institutions of the Catholic church became aware, for reasons independent of these institutions, of their potential role as social actors in the ambit of the nation and tried to recover their history white defending the creation of their own political sphere of influence. 'The movement, confined at the beginning in the village structures, progressively gained a regional and national amplitude, claiming the equality in rights, the right to live in complete autonomy according to specifie social living modalities and self-determination inside a multinational country
