Jean-Marie Le Pen et le F.N. sont les surgeons contemporains d'une vieille tradition d'extrême droite nationaliste, populiste et xénophobe. Longtemps assoupie et dormante, elle a connu, dans le passé, des moments forts : à la fin du XIXe siècle dans les combats contre la République parlementaire, dans l'entre-deux guerres avec la fascination pour les régimes autoritaires et totalitaires, lors de la France de Vichy avec la collaboration, en 1956 dans le soubresaut d'une France de la boutique qui refuse la modernisation, enfin dans les années 60 avec la lutte pour le maintien d'une France coloniale.
