Today, Halloween seems to be an American holiday. And true, it is a deeply-rooted tradition in the New World. Yet it is a recent tradition. For a long time, while it was much observed in pre- industrial United Kingdom, it was not really celebrated in America. Paradoxically, while in the course, of the 19th century it was disappearing from the British calendar, it developped as a very popular event in Canada and the USA where it was actually picked up for its ancient British origins and especially its British references - so as to make sure the US and Canada, in the context of massive new immigration waves, were to remain of an Anglo-Saxon culture. Likewise, its old rites were selected and adapted to modern, fast-changing industrial America
