In 1839, when the discovery of the daguerreotype is announced by Daguerre, Nicéphore Niépce is "one of the inventors of photography", but only one of them, and the most neglected, outcast and overshadowed one. The elaboration of his Promethean status is a slow reconstruction, of his merits, helped by the emergence of technical inventions and patent legislation. The historical study of his work (in particular via his letters), profoundly linked to the constant modification of photographic procedure (resulting in the abandon of the daguerreotype), leads to the recognition of the concrete achievements of Niépce as the foundation of the principle of photography, in a generic sense. The official celebrations of the 1839 announcement (1889, 1939), of his work (1925), and of his death (1933) are the nodal points of the construction of Niépce's Promethean stature
