This article considers some of the ways in which 'America' functions as a screen for localized concerns in the work of European intellectuals and academics, often as a barely acknowledged dialectic that reflects back on the uncertainties of European identity. In the last few years, this dialectic has operated under the growing shadow of American empire and European estrangement from the USA. The first part of this article examines selected European intellectual perspectives on American empire, all of which promote Europe as a counter to American hegemony yet repress spectres of European empires and conflicts in their arguments. The second part asks what may be at issue in these current intellectual debates for the work of American studies scholars in Europe. Recalling the origins of European American studies in the Salzburg seminar of the late 1940s, it argues that the legacies of this post-war beginning haunt the discipline still and speculates on how American studies in Europe might direct its critical energies to analysis of the American empire of today
