This paper aims to demonstrate the activity of the Public Defender's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, in the protection of social right to housing, through legal aid services delivered to low income citizens, be it in an individualistic and traditional approach or, sometimes in a more effective way, in a collective perspective, by means of class actions and other mechanisms. It also explains the extrajudicial measures and proceedings taken by the public defenders, lobbying at the State Parliament, with the goal to revert a political decision of the Governor which - if not revoked - could have resulted in the extinction of the “social rent” program, that currently is indispensable to safeguard the right to housing to thousands of families in the State of Rio de Janeiro
