Extent of the area of relationship between word and music far greater than simply the vocal setting of texts — especially when the range is expanded, as it should be, to include image and idea. Some further ramifications of their interaction as pursued or touched upon in the author's compositional experience. A contrast between the process of melting-down a large literary original to make it music-worthy, and the process of matching an inviolable poem in a musical setting. “Suppressed vocalization”, simple and complex instances: the rendition in music of imagery and the concepts arising out of it: suggestion that the entire external and internal world are fair game for music's intrinsic powers of expression. Ideas of purely grammatical parallels or analogies between complex passages of verse or prose and complex paragraph-construction in music: home-made philosophy and mythology (or amateur dabbling in the riffraff of the world-spirit) as music's natural playground
