The relationships between nonverbalized feelings and perceptions of the counseling relationship were investigated through the use of inprocess instrumentation. Fifteen clients used pushbutton handsets to record nonverbalized feelings of negativeness, positiveness, anxiousness, and frustration. Fifteen counselors used similar handsets to record perceptions of client responses in those categories. The Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory was used to assess participant perceptions of the counseling relationship. Frequencies of clients' nonverbalized feelings and counselors' perceptions of them were generally unrelated to the participants' perceptions of the counseling relationship
