For a general subject much treated in Anglophone scholarship, this Francophone study citing many sources in Chinese and English is ambitious in scope and rich in material. Shiyan Li’s book is a curious and self-assured miscellany. Case studies of leading artists such as Huang Yong Ping, Xu Bing, Ai Weiwei and Cao Fei and of gallerists such as Lorenz Helbling (and of his ShanghART) appear alongside thematic treatises, for instance the reception of Marcel Duchamp in China since the late 1970s
