Alessandro Gallicchio’s book aims to fill a gap in the field of research into art critics during the interwar period; in particular critics who focussed on the “Paris School” – which is still an odd term, in that this was a school without a movement. The term actually refers to a polymorphous group of artists gathered at Montparnasse, many foreign and Jewish, one of whose defining features was less formal and more contextual.
