When his Stilfragen was published in 1893, Alois Riegl was the curator of the textile department at the Decorative Arts museum in Vienna. Contrary to his colleagues, Riegl did not extract only an inventory and archaeological understanding from this daily contact with the objects which comprised one of the very first collections in the world. At the age of 35, he established the basis of a new conception of the Kunstwissenschaft which was in complete opposition with the conception of his equal
