This work has been made possible by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It is part of a larger project on Hegel, law, violence, and community I am currently working on as a Gastwissenschaftler in the Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main, at the invitation of Professor Christoph Menke. Some of the ideas examined here were originally discussed in Professor Menke’s colloquium and a workshop on “Norm and Nature” organized in November 2013 by Thomas Khurana and Dirk Setton in the Excellence Cluster for Normative Orders. They were also initially presented at the international conference on “Hegel’s Conception of Contradiction: Logic, Life and History,” organized by Professor Karin de Boer at KU Leuven in May 2013. I would like to specially thank professors Menke and de Boer for their comments and questions, and for the opportunity to present and discuss my work with a larger audience
