The writings of Sayyid Qutb and other leading figures of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt on religious, social, and political topics have been widely publicized and studied in detail. Up to now, however, their fictional works have not been the object of western scholarly research, with the exception of the prison memoirs of Zainab al-Ghazill, ayyam mmn hayiti (Days of my Life) and the autobiography of Shaykh Kishk qzs~at ayyami, mudhakkarat al-Shaikh Kishk (The Story of My Days: Memoirs of Shaikh Kishk).1 Apart from the prison memoirs, an extensive corpus of literary texts also exists, covering all genres of literature, including poetry, the novel and novella, the short story, and drama.2 Some of these fictional narratives have been strongly influenced by their authors' experience of imprisonment, a phenomenon seen as well in the ideological writings and thinking of leaders of Islamic movements in Egypt.3 Turkish authors showing islamicist attitudes are increasingly publishing fictional works. Both in Turkey and in Egypt, prison memoirs are a popular genre. Aside from a huge amount of poetry
