His Excellency the Commissioner: Memoirs of an Ethnography Conducted Over 40 Years Ago by an Improvised Ethnographer This paper reports an ethnography conducted over 40 years ago by an improvised ethnographer, as the author describes himself. Graduated in law in the 1970s, the author migrated to sociology. It is recounted his journey through the sociological theory then in vogue and through the police agencies in the city of Recife, where the police commissioner exercised the functions of a judge, in a kind of “informal law,” in absentia and sometimes even in violation of official law, solving criminal and civil cases that came to these agencies in search of a solution. The text presents the theoretical and practical difficulties the author faced and how he resolved them
