O discurso científico hegemónico da Economia é, no essencial, um discurso acerca do mercado, suposto lugar de livre troca onde, da conciliação espontânea de interesses individuais divergentes, resulta a realização do interesse coletivo. As produções e transações não mercantis são pois ignoradas nesta análise, independentemente do seu contributo para a realização do bem-estar humano e social. É o caso das atividades ligadas à reprodução e ao cuidado às pessoas, atribuição preferencial das mulheres em todas as sociedades, que assim são remetidas para o domínio da invisibilidade económica. Uma análise crítica, de inspiração feminista, aos conceitos de trabalho, família, bem-estar e poder permite formular propostas substantivas para transformar a Economia numa disciplina com preocupações éticas, dedicada ao estudo mais realista da existência humana e à realização do bem comum
